| Dirk Gently, the guy from Saxondale and the poor woman who married Ross on Friends |
...
It was with only mild enthusiasm then that I began watching BBC 4's Dirk Gently series, produced by BBC Wales and very much from the same stable as Dr. Who and Sherlock. But the TV series is actually a lot more interesting than the novels. The self involved, clever and rather irritating Gently (yes he reminds me of stablemate Sherlock as well) is well played by Stephen Mangan. He doesn't take himself as seriously as Benedict Cumberbatch and he's ably supported by Darren Boyd who I first saw as the annoying yuppie neighbour in Saxondale and who was a brilliant John Cleese in BBC 4's Holy Flying Circus. The writing in Gently is crisp (by Howard Overman) and the style and editing are very much in the Sherlock/Dr Who mode too.

Like I say I wasn't expecting much from this show but after two episodes I am mildly optimistic that the Beeb have another cult hit on their hands. It's a shame its on BBC 4 as it will only get a small fraction of the audience of Sherlock but if you can find it, I think you'll like it.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll try to catch up on BBC iplayer. Like you, I didn't really rate the books so didn't take much interest when I saw the TV series advertised.
Incidentally, I'm reading Eoin Colfer's 'And Another Thing...' just now and I have to say that, after a slow start, it's very good. And to commit some heresy of my own, I suspect it's better than what Adams himself would have done had he written HHGG#6.
Now I have to watch it and see. Moved over to North America when young and we don't get a lot of these shows. By description, your reaction reminds me of catching an old episode of "The Young Ones" recently online; I'd really played up its general hilarity to my friend (I'll refrain from calling "My Buddy" and save everyone other lines from the show) but it really showed its age.
Good Lord, people hated Thatcher. She was to 80s punchlines as Britney Spears was to 90s web searches.
I read the first one and found it disappointing but this looks fun.
Okay, I'll check it out.

Everyone said the Gently books were great and they got great reviews (still do) but the truth is that they aren't really that brilliant are they?

The Young Ones is still good. The University Challenge episode I suppose is my favourite. Or possibly the Narnia one.

Definitely a case of the TV adaptation improving the original I think.

If you liked Sherlock you should like this.
Don't know if you heard about this new deal of Cronenberg's, Adrian, but
it should be interesting. This doctor Hunter was, um, well, I'm not sure what the right term would be.

That looks pretty darn interesting
Howard Overman is one of the best writers around at the moment.
Misfits is literally amazing, especially the actress who plays Kelly.
He also wrote a great little series called Vexed which noone watched.
